Summary of Unit / InquiryThe purpose of this unit of inquiry is to introduce students to the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia. We will focus on how the civilization developed, what it accomplished, how its society was organized, and whether its form of government was effective. The historical thinking skills that we will focus heavily on are cause and effect and fact vs. interpretation. In order to teach about the importance of law, order, and justice, students will thoroughly examine and analyze Hammurabi's Code. The unit will culminate with an enduring understanding of how the Mesopotamians created a civilization that influenced other civilizations for centuries to come.
